STUD INFORMATION
I offer stud service to approved females. Most breeders own their own stud dogs because they possess qualities that make them worthy of breeding. Our dogs have done well in racing, conformation and go-to-ground. We hunt our dogs throughout the year and are breeding to produce quality puppies. A good friend of mine said that each dog needs to be like a tool in a toolbox and should serve a purpose. I live by this motto and feel that my dogs have qualities that enhance my overall kennel.
We want to breed to improve the quality of our puppies. Our stud dogs are all brucellosis negative, BAER tested and Cerf. tested. They have all had health exams prior to ever being used for stud. We know the pedigrees and can determine where traits come from within our lines. We retire our females as they mature to make way for improvement in our kennel. We can help determine a stud that can compliment your female based on her pedigree as well as by her conformation.
Please realize that you must think about improving the puppies you will produce by breeding to a quality dog. If your dog has health issues they could be hereditary and must be ruled out before breeding. Most dogs born in a litter are pet quality and the show quality dogs are usually sold to show homes.
We suggest doing a lot of reading before breeding your dog. You should make sure that the male and female are both brucellosis negative. This is a disease that is contagious to both people and dogs. This is not only transmitted through breeding but is also from urine.
CONSIDERING USING YOUR DOG FOR STUD???
When you are considering using your dog for stud ask yourself why? What motives do you have?
Will this breeding better the breed standard or just create more puppies?
We all love our dogs and think they are the best dogs with four legs but if you want an objective opinion attend a few terrier trials and talk to the judges and breeders there.
If you bought your dog from a reputable breeder they can guide you with your decision. Most reputable breeders will explain what I have stated on this site. Breeding isn't a money proposition - you won't make money with your family pet. Most people who are looking to breed are seeking qualities to enhance the quality of their future puppies.
If you are breeding to keep obtain a puppy for yourself remember since you have a male you need to get a female to keep yours company. Now you must make sure that you have the daughter spayed or havoc will follow. We usually suggest to people that in the long run you are better off buying or rescuing a female to keep your company. I don't advocate going out to buy a female to start a breeding program without good foundation dogs. A female should not be bred until she has her third heat cycle or is 18 mos. old whichever comes first. Trying to keep a male in the house away from the female is a tough feat. I know of a dog that climbed a first floor window, went through the screen and got to a 9 month old bitch (in a wire crate) and bred her. So, unless you have kennel facilities to keep a stud it can be difficult.
Male dogs can and will find a female in heat for up to 3 miles so your lovable dog that was loyal now has a reason to wander. Many people have lost their beloved pet because the male was used for stud and took off at the first scent of a female.
Male dogs become more territorial and have a hormonal urge to mark in the house after breeding a female. Some males become possessive of the female while she is in their care and have been known to become aggressive with family members.
Are you prepared to have a female stay at your house for a week?
Do you have facilities to house the female?
Do you know what to do with an unwilling bitch?
What makes you think your dog is worth passing on his genetics?
Has he won at conformation, racing, go-to-ground?
Has he hunted different quarry?
Does he have a 5 generation pedigree?
Does he have a good temperament?
Has he passed BAER testing (hearing)?
Have you had his eyes Cerf tested?
Will the person you stud your dog with be able to hand-pick the right homes? Will you know how to determine if your stud will compliment or improve on the bitch? If not, you are contributing to overpopulation.
If you can not answer the above questions re-think breeding. Breeding doesn't mean putting the male and female together and letting them figure it out. If you own a bitch use this as a guideline for selecting a good responsible stud owner.
IF YOUR DOG CAME WITH A SPAY/NEUTER CONTRACT OR YOUR DOG CAME FROM A PET SHOP THINK TWICE ABOUT BREEDING IT. Most pet quality dogs are sold with an enforceable contract. If your breeder finds out you violated that contract you will lose in a court of law. If your dog came from a pet shop you probably won't get any papers or pedigree information. So how will you be improving this breed? Do you know the laws for puppy sales in your state? New Jersey has one of the toughest & most respected laws governing the sales of puppies.
Trust me I have heard a lot of reasons why people want to breed their dog. People tend to have the notion that a male needs to breed, this isn't true the dog doesn't know what he is missing when he is neutered. Your neutered dog is less likely to develop prostrate cancer and should not mark his territory once neutered.
I get at least 1 phone call a week about relinquishing a dog to the rescue and most dogs are not neutered. When I ask why they haven't neutered the dog I get the standard answer is oh, we had plans on breeding him! Well, they go on to say the dog is aggressive, marking, dominant and they don't want to live with the dog anymore. This is not how the dog would have probably ended up if he was neutered at 6 mos. There are a lot of people who are from the old school of thought that you are taking his manhood away by neutering - NOT TRUE! You are not taking his manhood, all you are doing is preventing him from problems in the future.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING LINKS BEFORE YOU JUMP INTO BREEDING YOUR PET QUALITY DOG. Make a note of the code of ethics quality breeders follow and ask yourself if you will adhere to them. Remember the rescue is filled with dogs from backyard breeders, pet shops, puppy mills and uninformed owners. Please don't contribute to these circumstances. Consider leaving breeding to qualified breeders.
